High Protein Smoothie Without Protein Powder (Skyr Recipes)

Spring has arrived in Cape Town, the mornings are warmer and the blender is back on the counter. A smoothie is one of the fastest breakfasts there is, but most fruit smoothies are light on protein. The usual fix is a scoop of protein powder. If you would rather skip the tub of powder, you can still build a smoothie with close to 30 g of protein from everyday food.

The short answer: start with a thick, strained yoghurt as the base, use milk instead of juice, and add one or two protein extras such as oats, peanut butter or chia seeds. A 150 g scoop of Vars Skyr alone gives about 17 g of protein, and with milk and oats the glass reaches roughly 28 g.

Why the base matters most

Fruit adds flavour and colour but very little protein. A raw banana has about 1.1 g per 100 g and frozen strawberries about 0.4 g per 100 g (USDA FoodData Central). So the protein in your smoothie depends almost entirely on what you blend the fruit into.

That is where the straining ladder comes in. All yoghurt starts as cultured milk. Plain yoghurt is not strained. Greek style yoghurt in South African shops is often made thicker with added milk solids, thickeners or stabilisers rather than by straining, so it is worth reading the label. Strained Greek yoghurt has some of the liquid whey drained off. Skyr sits at the top of the ladder: it is strained further, so more whey is removed and more protein stays in the pot, without any protein powder added.

Protein boosters that are not powder

  • Rolled oats: about 13.2 g protein per 100 g dry, so 30 g adds roughly 4 g and makes the smoothie more filling.

  • Peanut butter: about 22.5 g protein per 100 g, so one tablespoon (15 g) adds roughly 3.4 g.

  • Chia seeds: about 16.5 g protein per 100 g, so 10 g adds roughly 1.7 g and thickens the glass as it stands.

  • Milk instead of juice: 150 ml of full cream milk adds about 5.6 g, where most fruit juice adds very little.

Figures for oats, peanut butter and chia come from USDA FoodData Central; check the label of the brand you buy, as products differ.

Three high protein smoothies without protein powder

Each recipe makes one large glass. Blend everything until smooth, adding a splash more milk if it is too thick. The protein totals are calculated from the figures in this article.

1. Strawberry oat smoothie (about 28 g protein)

  • 150 g Vars Skyr

  • 150 ml full cream milk

  • 30 g rolled oats

  • 100 g frozen strawberries

  • 100 g banana

Strawberry picking season around Stellenbosch runs from October to the end of December, so this is the one to make with fresh berries from a weekend on the farm. Freeze them on a tray first for a thicker, colder smoothie.

2. Peanut butter banana smoothie (about 29 g protein)

  • 150 g Vars Skyr

  • 200 ml full cream milk

  • 100 g banana, sliced and frozen

  • 1 tablespoon (15 g) peanut butter

  • A pinch of cinnamon

Our pick for after training. Frozen banana gives it a milkshake texture without ice.

3. Berry chia smoothie (about 25 g protein)

  • 150 g Vars Skyr

  • 150 ml full cream milk

  • 100 g frozen strawberries or mixed berries

  • 10 g chia seeds

Let it stand for five minutes after blending and the chia turns it into a spoonable smoothie bowl. Top with fruit and a few nuts.

Tips for a better smoothie

  • Put the liquid in the blender first, then the skyr, then the frozen fruit. The blades catch better.

  • Skyr is thick, so start with less fruit than usual and taste before adding honey. Ripe banana often sweetens enough.

  • Prepping for the week? Weigh fruit, oats and seeds into freezer bags. In the morning add skyr and milk and blend.

Where Vars Skyr fits in

We make Vars Skyr in small batches in our own kitchen in Kensington, Cape Town. It has two ingredients, skimmed milk and live cultures, with no added protein powder, thickeners or preservatives. It contains 11.5 g protein per 100 g, so a 150 g smoothie scoop gives about 17 g and a 500 g tub holds 57.5 g in total. That is enough for three smoothies with a little left over for breakfast.

FAQ

How can I add protein to a smoothie without protein powder?

Use a high protein yoghurt such as skyr as the base, swap juice for milk, and add oats, peanut butter or chia seeds. Together these can bring one glass to around 25 to 30 g of protein.

Which yoghurt has the most protein for smoothies?

In our comparison above, Vars Skyr has the most protein per 100 g at 11.5 g, followed by strained Greek yoghurt at 9.0 g (USDA). The Greek style double cream yoghurts we checked contain 5.2 to 5.5 g.

Is skyr the same as Greek yoghurt?

No. Both are thicker than plain yoghurt, but skyr is strained further, so more whey is removed and more protein remains. Many Greek style yoghurts in South Africa are thickened with added milk solids or stabilisers instead of straining.

Can I make a protein smoothie the night before?

You can, but it thickens in the fridge, especially with oats or chia. Keep it covered, shake or stir well and add a splash of milk before drinking. Freezer bags of prepped fruit and oats are an easy alternative.
